Upsala-Ekeby was founded in 1885 outside the Swedish city of Uppsala by the von Bahr family. The location was chosen because the area had clay that was particularly suitable for making tiles. At first, the company only produced bricks. However, it soon expanded its production to include wall tiles, masonry heaters, tableware and decorative ceramics. By the end of the 1910s, the factory was the largest factory in Scandinavia with 300 employees. Upsala-Ekeby had a short but brilliant period of art ceramics in the 1930s and 1960s. But in the late 1960s, sales declined due to increasing international competition. The factory downsized in the 1970s and was finally closed in 1978. But interest in Upsala-Ekeby ceramics lives on among fans and collectors!
This bowl for sale is made of coarse ceramic and has a geometric turquoise-black pattern. The bowl was designed by Mari Simmulson in the 1960s. in color. The bottom of the bowl is stamped UE (Upsala-Ekeby).
